RI to host 2002 Physics Olympics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Indonesia will host the 33rd International Physics
\nOlympics (IPhO) in 2002, the Ministry of National Education's
\ndirector general of elementary and high school education,
\nIndradjati, said.<\/p>\n
Bandung in West Java and Denpasar in Bali will be considered
\nto host the annual event, he said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"Bandung had actually been chosen as the host, with the
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB) acting as its organizing
\ninstitution, but due to unfavorable security concerns lately,
\nIPhO president Waldemar Gorzkowski suggested that the venue be
\nchanged to Bali,\" Indradjati said.<\/p>\n
The 33rd IPhO will be held from July 14 to 23 next year, while
\nthe International Mathematics Olympics will be held in Britain,
\nthe International Chemistry Olympics in the Netherlands, the
\nInternational Biology Olympics in Latvia, and the International
\nInformation Olympics in South Korea. All events will be held
\nbetween July and August next year.<\/p>\n
The 33rd IPhO is expected to be attended by 70 to 75
\ncountries, with each of them sending a delegation consisting of
\nfive contestants accompanied by two leaders.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has participated in physics competition since 1993,
\nwith several students receiving awards for outstanding
