RI, Thailand, KL to sign rubber pact<\/p>\n
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP): The world's three largest producers of
\nnatural rubber - Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia - are preparing
\nto sign a joint declaration on cooperation in the rubber industry
\non July 7.<\/p>\n
The eight areas of cooperation under the declaration will help
\nfarmers with small plots of land to get better rubber prices, Dow
\nJones Newswires reported Wednesday quoting Chakarn
\nSaengruksawong, deputy director-general of the department of
\nagriculture.<\/p>\n
The countries will work together in managing exports and
\nproduction, increasing domestic consumption and coordinating
\ngovernment actions to boost prices, among other areas, Chakarn
\nwas quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
After the joint declaration is signed, the ministers will meet
\nat least once a year to discuss details of cooperation, he said.<\/p>\n
At a meeting of senior officials of the three countries in
\nBangkok last week, the three countries agreed to adjust the
\nrubber supply in line with market demand. But Indonesia said it
\nneeded to consider the issue further since it is worried that it
\ndoes not have a sufficient budget to intervene.<\/p>\n
Chakarn said the three countries also agreed to work together
\nto tackle the problem of what to do when the defunct
\nInternational Natural Rubber Organization disposes of its rubber
\nstocks. INRO's members last year agreed to dissolve their cartel
\nafter Thailand and Malaysia quit.<\/p>\n
INRO is seeking to dispose of about 140,000 tons of its
\nnatural rubber stockpile by June 2001.<\/p>\n
Although Indonesia agreed to cooperate with Thailand and
\nMalaysia in purchasing INRO stocks, it faces financial
\nconstraints and might have to leave the buying to the private
\nsector, Chakarn said.<\/p>\n
Thailand is the world's largest rubber exporter, following by
\nIndonesia and Malaysia. The three countries account for about 80
\npercent of global rubber exports.<\/p>",
