RI, Thailand agree to promote investment<\/p>\n

The fifth meeting of the joint commission on economic and
\ntechnical cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the
\nKingdom of Thailand has concluded, with mutual agreement to
\npromote closer bilateral relations, and satisfaction at the
\nincrease of investment flows between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a joint press conference held after signing a
\nmemorandum of understanding (MOU) on economic and technical
\ncooperation with Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs Surakiart
\nSathirathai on Friday evening, Indonesian Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Hassan Wirayuda said the meeting had also agreed to
\naccelerate the establishment of a subcommittee on investment.<\/p>\n
The subcommittee, he said, would serve as a forum for the
\nexchange of information between related institutions in both
\nThailand and Indonesia, in a bid to encourage direct investment
\nin both countries.<\/p>\n
\"The meeting also agreed to expedite the process of the
\nconclusion of the MOU on cooperation on investment promotion
\nactivities between the offices of the Board of Investment (BOI)
\nof the Kingdom of Thailand and the Investment Coordinating Board
\n(BKPM) of the Republic of Indonesia,\" Hassan said.<\/p>\n
The two delegations, according to Hassan, also appreciated the
\nforthcoming establishment of the Thai-Indonesian Business Council
\nin Bangkok on May 27 and expressed confidence that the council
\nwould become the forum for the private sector of both countries
\nto increase its interaction and cooperation in trade, investment,
\nindustry and banking.<\/p>\n
The same appreciation was also addressed by delegations of the
\ntwo countries to the trade agreement between Indonesia and
\nThailand, to be signed during the planned visit of President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri in August.<\/p>\n
\"Furthermore, both sides agreed to expedite the conclusion of
\nagreements on maritime and air transportation by August of the
\nsame year,\" Hassan said.<\/p>\n
Both Indonesia and Thailand, according to Hassan, also
\nexpressed appreciation on the positive development in Thai-
\nIndonesian fisheries cooperation, but Thailand further proposed
\nthat Indonesia provide an operating manual for fishing in the
\nIndonesian Exclusive Economic Zone.<\/p>\n
The two countries also expressed delight at progress in
\neducational cooperation, cultural exchange activities and tourism
\ncooperation between the two countries. Indonesia, in particular,
\ntook note of Thailand's proposal to put emphasis on five areas of
\ncooperation: rubber and wood, halal food, palm oil, tourism and
\nenergy.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the same media conference, Thai foreign minister
\nSurakiart expressed hope that all the agreed commitment for
\ncooperation in various fields between Indonesia and Thailand
\nwould materialize as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
He said that cooperation between both countries would become a
\nmodel for the country's future trade cooperation and might also
\nbe extended to other neighboring countries, such as Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The sixth meeting of the joint commission would be held in
\nThailand at a date to be agreed later by both countries. Both
\nalso agreed to include issues relating to political and security
\ncooperation at the sixth meeting.<\/p>",
