        "content": "<p>RI, Thailand agree to promote investment<\/p>\n<p>Sri Wahyuni, The Jakarta Post, Yogyakarta<\/p>\n<p>The fifth meeting of the joint commission on economic and<br>\ntechnical cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and the<br>\nKingdom of Thailand has concluded, with mutual agreement to<br>\npromote closer bilateral relations, and satisfaction at the<br>\nincrease of investment flows between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a joint press conference held after signing a<br>\nmemorandum of understanding (MOU) on economic and technical<br>\ncooperation with Thailand's Minister of Foreign Affairs Surakiart<br>\nSathirathai on Friday evening, Indonesian Minister of Foreign<br>\nAffairs Hassan Wirayuda said the meeting had also agreed to<br>\naccelerate the establishment of a subcommittee on investment.<\/p>\n<p>The subcommittee, he said, would serve as a forum for the<br>\nexchange of information between related institutions in both<br>\nThailand and Indonesia, in a bid to encourage direct investment<br>\nin both countries.<\/p>\n<p>\"The meeting also agreed to expedite the process of the<br>\nconclusion of the MOU on cooperation on investment promotion<br>\nactivities between the offices of the Board of Investment (BOI)<br>\nof the Kingdom of Thailand and the Investment Coordinating Board<br>\n(BKPM) of the Republic of Indonesia,\" Hassan said.<\/p>\n<p>The two delegations, according to Hassan, also appreciated the<br>\nforthcoming establishment of the Thai-Indonesian Business Council<br>\nin Bangkok on May 27 and expressed confidence that the council<br>\nwould become the forum for the private sector of both countries<br>\nto increase its interaction and cooperation in trade, investment,<br>\nindustry and banking.<\/p>\n<p>The same appreciation was also addressed by delegations of the<br>\ntwo countries to the trade agreement between Indonesia and<br>\nThailand, to be signed during the planned visit of President<br>\nMegawati Soekarnoputri in August.<\/p>\n<p>\"Furthermore, both sides agreed to expedite the conclusion of<br>\nagreements on maritime and air transportation by August of the<br>\nsame year,\" Hassan said.<\/p>\n<p>Both Indonesia and Thailand, according to Hassan, also<br>\nexpressed appreciation on the positive development in Thai-<br>\nIndonesian fisheries cooperation, but Thailand further proposed<br>\nthat Indonesia provide an operating manual for fishing in the<br>\nIndonesian Exclusive Economic Zone.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries also expressed delight at progress in<br>\neducational cooperation, cultural exchange activities and tourism<br>\ncooperation between the two countries. Indonesia, in particular,<br>\ntook note of Thailand's proposal to put emphasis on five areas of<br>\ncooperation: rubber and wood, halal food, palm oil, tourism and<br>\nenergy.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the same media conference, Thai foreign minister<br>\nSurakiart expressed hope that all the agreed commitment for<br>\ncooperation in various fields between Indonesia and Thailand<br>\nwould materialize as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>He said that cooperation between both countries would become a<br>\nmodel for the country's future trade cooperation and might also<br>\nbe extended to other neighboring countries, such as Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth meeting of the joint commission would be held in<br>\nThailand at a date to be agreed later by both countries. Both<br>\nalso agreed to include issues relating to political and security<br>\ncooperation at the sixth meeting.<\/p>",
