RI supports Japan's APEC action plans<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto supported yesterday Japan's
\naction plans for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, which
\nwill be announced at its third leadership meeting in Osaka in
\nNovember.<\/p>\n
\"President Soeharto, after listening to a report from Japanese
\nMinister of International Trade and Industry Ryutaro Hashimoto,
\ngave his firm support to the action plans prepared by Japan for
\nthe Osaka meeting,\" Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade
\nHartarto said after accompanying the Japanese minister in a
\nmeeting with Soeharto at the Bina Graha presidential office.<\/p>\n
The third summit in Osaka is expected to come up with an
\n\"action agenda\" to implement the free trade declaration made at
\nthe second summit in Bogor, West Java, last November.<\/p>\n
At their Bogor meeting, APEC leaders agreed that all members
\nshould achieve free trade and investment in the region by 2020
\nwith industrialized members aiming for an earlier deadline of
\n2010.<\/p>\n
Hartarto said yesterday that the planned agenda will include
\ntrade liberalization, technical cooperation and the facilitation
\nof trade and investment among APEC members.<\/p>\n
Hashimoto said that Japan will be responsible for the
\nformulation of the action agenda to implement the Bogor
\ndeclaration.<\/p>\n
\"With comments from President Soeharto, we are strongly
\ndetermined that the Osaka meeting will be a success,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Hartarto said that Japan, with its strong leadership, is also
\nexpected to be able to solve problems caused by differences of
\nopinion among APEC members.<\/p>\n
APEC groups Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong
\nKong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New
\nZealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan,
\nThailand and the United States.<\/p>\n
Refusal<\/p>\n
The minister refused to specify the differences which have
\nerupted among APEC members. \"I do believe that these differences
\ncan be solved by senior officials in their next meeting in Hong
\nKong,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Hong Kong meeting is scheduled for Sept. 12 to 13.<\/p>\n
Japanese officials said in June that the United States had
\ndisrupted preparations for the November summit in Osaka by
\nbacking out of a proposed regional free-trade mechanism.<\/p>\n
According to the officials, Washington wanted a short-term
\napproach to freeing trade in the region instead of the long-term
\nmechanism adopted at the APEC summit in Bogor last November.<\/p>\n
Hashimoto said yesterday that he had also discussed efforts to
\npromote bilateral relations between Japan and Indonesia and
\nexplained Japan's newly announced measures aimed at increasing
\nJapanese investment overseas and curbing the appreciation of the
