RI students in Europe call change<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian students in Europe sent a strong
\nmessage home over the weekend, urging the government to respect
\nfreedom of expression as guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution.<\/p>\n
Leaders of the Association of Indonesian Students (PPI) in
\nEurope gathered in the small English town of Hatfield on Monday
\nfor a seminar in connection with Indonesia's 50th independence
\nanniversary, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the meeting the students issued a
\ndeclaration calling on the government to work towards democracy
\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The students said the House of Representatives needed to
\n\"optimize\" its function as a legislative body.<\/p>\n
An effective House and guaranteed of freedom of speech were
\ntwo elements crucial for the development of democracy in
\nIndonesia, the students said.<\/p>\n
The July 6-9 Hatfield gathering was addressed by senior
\nIndonesian statesmen, including Roeslan Abdulgani, M. Sadli and
\nCosmas Batubara. Some Indonesian ambassadors posted in European
\ncapitals were also present.<\/p>\n
The statement also stressed the need for Indonesia to
\nencourage the growth of a strong and critical middle class, which
\nthe students said was crucial to eliminating the last remnants of
