        "content": "<p>RI-S'pore extradition treaty tough: Yeo<\/p>\n<p>Progress has been made in negotiations for an extradition treaty<br>\nbetween Singapore and Indonesia but \"difficult issues\" remain to<br>\nbe resolved, Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo said on<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Since my last update to the House, there have been five<br>\nrounds of talks and good progress has been made,\" Yeo told<br>\nparliament.<\/p>\n<p>\"But it is not an easy agreement to negotiate. There are<br>\ndifficult issues to work through, some of which would require<br>\nchanging laws in Singapore and Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta considers an extradition treaty as crucial in its<br>\nfight against corruption, saying such a pact would allow<br>\nIndonesian authorities to run after alleged corrupt officials and<br>\nbusiness people who stash their money in the city-state.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore, a regional financial center, has insisted it has<br>\nenough safeguards to prevent the country from becoming a magnet<br>\nfor laundered funds.<\/p>\n<p>Yeo said on Monday officials from both sides will meet soon to<br>\ncontinue negotiations, which will be carried out in parallel with<br>\ntalks for a Defense Cooperation Agreement and a Counter-Terrorism<br>\nAgreement.<\/p>\n<p>Last February, visiting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang<br>\nYudhoyono and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed<br>\nto speed up talks on the proposed extradition treaty.<\/p>\n<p>Yeo was upbeat on overall bilateral ties, saying that from<br>\n2001-2004, Singapore was consistently ranked among the top five<br>\ninvestors in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore, whose armed forces gave a crucial lifeline to<br>\nIndonesia's Aceh province in the immediate aftermath of the<br>\nDecember tsunami disaster, is moving forward with assistance in<br>\nthe post-tsunami rehabilitation, Yeo said.<\/p>\n<p>Among these projects is the construction of a pier in<br>\nMeulaboh, the biggest Indonesian town nearest to the epicenter of<br>\nthe massive Indian Ocean earthquake and giant waves which killed<br>\n131,000 in Aceh province. --AFP<\/p>",
