RI shuold coordinate regional counter-terror effort<\/p>\n
Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew said recently the
\nleader behind the aggressive Jemaah Islamiah was lurking
\nsomewhere in Indonesia, causing a stir in the vast archipelago.
\nOver the days, some Indonesian politicians, Islamic organizations
\nand media have lashed out at Lee and the Singapore government.<\/p>\n
Basically, Lee's remarks were not directed at the Indonesian
\ngovernment, nor its people, but simply to illustrate the threat
\nfaced by regional countries using an existing phenomenon. As a
\nresult, they did not infringe upon the diplomatic principles of
\nmutual respect among sovereign states. Instead, the relevant
\npersonnel, organisations and mass media in Indonesia have accused
\nhim of having hurt the country's feelings.<\/p>\n
The issue also shows that despite having established a
\ndemocratic mechanism, Indonesia still lacks a matured population
\nworthy of a democratic society. Many Indonesian parties and their
\nleaders resort to sensitive issues for their personal interests,
\noften at the expense of the well-being of the nation and the
\npeople.<\/p>\n
To break away from its current doldrums, Indonesia has to
\nstart right from its very heart. Everyone should put the state
\nabove all else and abandon malicious struggles among the many
\nfactions.<\/p>\n
Terrorism is a cross-border issue. Neither Malaysia nor
\nSingapore has the ability to diffuse the threat on their own
\nwithout the help from Indonesia. Indonesia must not overlook the
\nfact that terrorism can one day erode the nation.<\/p>\n
Even if Lee's remarks have been unpleasant, at least they
\nshould not be given a deaf ear.<\/p>\n
