RI sends condolences to N. Korea<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto and Minister of Foreign
\nAffairs Ali Alatas have joined world leaders in sending messages
\nof condolences and sympathy to the people and government of North
\nKorea over the death of President Kim Il-sung.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday announced that it
\nreceived confirmation on the death of President Kim Il-sung, 82,
\nwho died of a heart attack on Friday.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the House Commission I
\noverseeing foreign affairs, information, defense and security,
\nAisyah Aminy, was quoted by Antara as saying that she hoped the
\ndeath of the North Korean leader would not have any effect on
\nplans to hold summit meetings between South and North Korea and
\nbetween North Korea and the U.S.<\/p>\n
"We express our condolences over the death of the North Korean
\nleader but what is just as important is that the scheduled
\nsummits, which are expected to bring peace to the region, will
\nnot cease with the death of President Kim," she said.<\/p>\n
Kim was considered to be the world's last hard-line Stalinist
\nleaders. His death came amidst an international deadlock over
\nsuspicions that the North was developing nuclear weapons, and
\nless than three weeks before he was to meet with South Korean
\nPresident Kim Young-sam at a historic inter-Korean summit in
\nPyongyang.<\/p>\n
As the current leader of the Non-Aligned Movement, of which
\nNorth Korea is a member, Indonesia has repeatedly called for
\ndialogs between the parties involved.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has encouraged talks between North and South Korea,
\nbetween North Korea and the U.S. and between North Korea and the
