RI seeks to regain artifacts from Dutch<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian embassy in the Netherlands is
\ncurrently trying to retrieve artifacts which are considered
\nnational heritage from Dutch museums, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
The news agency quoted Indonesia's ambassador to The Hague,
\nSoedarmanto Kadarisman, as saying that initiatives to retrieve
\nparticular artifacts should be initiated by Indonesia's
\nprovincial governments.<\/p>\n
\"The first move is for the provincial administration to write
\nto the embassy,\" Soedarmanto said in Padang, West Sumatra, where
\nhe was accompanying Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands during a
\nvisit there.<\/p>\n
The embassy would follow up such requests through diplomatic
\nchannels, he added.<\/p>\n
Soedarmanto said he had found that museums in the Netherlands
\npossess artifacts from Indonesia, and that some of are of a kind
\nthat can no longer be found in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
He added, however, that determining the legal status of such
\nartifacts would require extensive studies in Indonesia. He said
\nit was necessary to determine whether a given artifact had been
\nlegally purchased or had been appropriated during the Dutch
