RI seeks contract with UAE<\/p>\n
ABU DHABI (Reuter): Indonesia is seeking a $250-270 million
\ncontract to supply maritime patrol aircraft to the United Arab
\nEmirates, Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas said during a
\nvisit to the Gulf Arab state on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
"We are interested in bidding for a contract to supply
\naircraft for maritime patrol...we are bidding for the supply of
\nCN-235, a joint venture production between Spain and Indonesia,"<\/p>\n
Alatas told a news conference in the UAE capital of Abu Dhabi.
\nIndonesia has already supplied seven military versions of the CN-
\n235 to the UAE which are now in operation.<\/p>\n
"The bidding is still going on," Alatas said, adding that
\nfirms from Spain and Canada were also bidding for the aircraft.<\/p>\n
The two governments on Thursday signed a memorandum of
\nunderstanding to provide bilateral trade consultations.
\nAlatas is visiting Abu Dhabi and Qatar on his return to Jakarta
\nfrom this week's Islamic summit in Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Earlier reports said that eight countries, including Turkey,
\nArgentina, the United States, Pakistan, Columbia, Saudi Arabia,
\nBurkina Faso, and Sweden, have expressed interest in buying N-250
\ncommuter aircraft produced domestically by Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The state-owned aircraft manufacturer PT Industri Pesawat
\nTerbang Nusantara (IPTN) saidt Pakistan had made a firm
\ncommitment to buy 15 N-250 turboprop airplanes, Columbia to
\npurchase four units, and Sweden another 12 units.<\/p>\n
The other five countries have expressed strong interest in
\npurchasing the fly-by-wire airplanes but have yet to make firm
\norders.<\/p>",
