        "content": "<p>RI-RP trade continues to expand<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (JP): Trade between Indonesia and the Philippines<br>\ncontinued to expand last year but at the slower growth rate of<br>\n31.67 percent, down from 60.73 percent in 1995, according to data<br>\nat the Indonesian embassy here.<\/p>\n<p>The embassy&apos;s commercial attache, Achmadi, said yesterday<br>\nbilateral trade was US$692 million in 1996 (as of November), up<br>\nfrom $704 million in 1995 and $438 million in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The final figure for last year may reach $740 million,&quot;<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Trade over the last three years has been in favor of Indonesia<br>\nwith a $432 million surplus last year, $446 million in 1995 and<br>\n$296 million in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Philippine imports from Indonesia are mainly copper<br>\nconcentrates, anhydrous ammonia, urea, bituminous coal and other<br>\nkinds of coal.<\/p>\n<p>Achmadi said Indonesia imported mainly agricultural products<br>\nlike coconut oil, fresh and chilled shallots.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry<br>\nand the Makati Business Group, a body grouping the Philippines&apos;<br>\nleading business groups, gave full support for the first ASEAN<br>\nbusiness summit which will be held in Jakarta next month.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal Bakrie, chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of<br>\nCommerce and Industry, said more than 400 firms would participate<br>\nin the event.<\/p>\n<p>Aburizal, who is also the ASEAN Chambers of Commerce and<br>\nIndustry president, visited Manila as part of his ASEAN tour to<br>\npromote the summit.<\/p>\n<p>He also met yesterday with Philippines Minister of Trade and<br>\nIndustry Cesar Bautista.<\/p>\n<p>The summit will promote ASEAN business and investment<br>\nopportunities in five sectors: food and agriculture, automotive<br>\nindustry and capital goods, banking and insurance, franchises,<br>\nand intellectual property rights and legal services and<br>\ninfrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The summit will gather business and government leaders from<br>\nASEAN countries and ASEAN&apos;s major trading partners.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,<br>\nSingapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
