        "content": "<p>RI rice crop in 1995 estimated at 49m tons<\/p>\n<p>HAMBURG (Reuter): Indonesia's 1995 rice (unhusked) crop was<br>\nestimated at 49 million tons, up 3.89 percent from last year,<br>\nagriculture minister Syarifudin Baharsyah told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>He would not comment on the full year outlook for imports but<br>\nsaid this production figure was \"quite high.\"<\/p>\n<p>State commodities regulator BULOG put first half 1995 imports<br>\nat 1.3 million tons.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said imports were made to stabilize domestic<br>\nprices rather than fill supply gaps.<\/p>\n<p>\"Whether we buy or sell is decided according to the national<br>\nstocks situation,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He defended the role of BULOG which has come under criticism<br>\nfrom within the country and the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>\"BULOG is not setting prices, it is working through the<br>\nmarket, it buys from farmers when certain floor prices are<br>\nreached,\" he said, adding such practices could be found<br>\nthroughout the world.<\/p>",
