RI raises diplomatic ties with South Africa<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has raised its diplomatic ties with
\nSouth Africa to a full ambassadorial level although both counties
\nhave yet to appoint their respective official ambassadors.<\/p>\n
A joint communique on the issue was signed on Friday by the
\nchief representatives of Indonesia and South Africa at the United
\nNations, Nugroho Wisnumurti and Vernon R.W. Steward respectively,
\nthe Antara news agency reported from New York.<\/p>\n
The communique said that the opening of diplomatic ties was
\nbased on the wishes of the two countries to strengthen their
\nfriendly ties and bilateral cooperation, mutual respect for the
\nother's sovereignty, independence and integrity and non-
\ninterference in the other's domestic affairs.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has already opened a consulate in South Africa
\nchiefly to look after the interests of entrepreneurs from both
\ncountries as both countries are resolved to promote economic and
\ntrade ties.<\/p>\n
Steward after the signing ceremony said that despite the
\ndistance between the two countries, he is confident that economic
\nties could be enhanced particularly given Indonesia's rapid
\neconomic development.<\/p>\n
South Africa also intends to play an active role in the Non-
\nAligned Movement (NAM) which it joined recently after its first
\never non-racial elections, he said.<\/p>\n
The movement, currently chaired by Indonesia, was at the
\nforefront in the international campaign to end the apartheid
\npolitical system in South Africa, and has supported the struggle
\nof the African National Congress (ANC), the faction of the newly
\nelected president Nelson Mandela.<\/p>\n
Steward said that it may be sometime before South Africa
\nappoints a full ambassador for its mission in Indonesia given
\nthat the nation is now preoccupied with the reconstruction of the
\nnation. South Africa may instead appoint a non-resident
\nambassador as its representative in Indonesia, he added. (emb)<\/p>",
