RI pushes to include powerlifting at Olympic<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has once again pushed to include
\npowerlifting among the full-fledged, medal events that are
\ncompeted in at international and regional sports meet like
\nOlympic and Asian Games.<\/p>\n
At the opening of the world junior weightlifting and
\npowerlifting championships in Nusa Dua, Bali, yesterday, Minister
\nof Youth Affairs and Sports Hayono Isman said that powerlifting
\nhas become a favorite sport among young people all over the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesian Weightlifting and Powerlifting Association
\n(PABBSI) has been drawing up regular programs to attract more
\nyoung people to do the sport, and not just as a hobby,\" Hayono
\nwas quoted by Antara news agency as saying.<\/p>\n
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) picked weightlifting
\ninstead of powerlifting as an official event.<\/p>\n
The world championships feature 192 lifters of 23 countries
\ncompeting in both men's and women's categories. The United
\nStates, Australia, Germany, Austria, Canada, the Netherlands,
\nChinese Taipei, Japan, England, India, Norway, Poland, Russia,
\nSweden and New Zealand are among the visiting teams of the four-
\nday meet which started yesterday.<\/p>\n
The world weightlifting body (WWF) named Indonesia the host of
\nthe junior championships and the July 24-31 world weightlifting
\nmeet during an international congress in Hamilton, Canada last
\nOctober.<\/p>\n
The host team fields nine musclemen and nine musclewomen at
\nthe annual event, with the 60-kilogram Sutrisno, 75-kilogram
\nSyahroni expected to steal the limelight. Mingguarti, who
\ncompetes in the 52-kilogram division and Agustina, who joined the
\n67.5-kilogram class, will be the national women's team ace
\nlifters.<\/p>\n
PABBSI sorted out which athletes would make up the national
\nteams during selection matches held in Bogor, West Java last
\nApril.<\/p>\n
Hayono said if the IOC adopts powerlifting as a full-fledged
\nmedal event, Indonesian lifters should lay their hopes for gold
\non the lighter weight classes due to physical constraints.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia has a good chance in the 50-kilogram and 60-
