RI pushes for standard port charge<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's delegation will strive for the
\napplication of similar tariffs on passenger liners and freight
\nservices and port charges in the Growth Area of Brunei,
\nIndonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, an official said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
\"The differences of port service charges are hampering the
\nflow of trade between the countries grouped in the East ASEAN
\ngrowth area forum,\" Freddy Rorimpandey, the chief of the North
\nSulawesi office of the Ministry of Transportation, was quoted by
\nAntara as saying.<\/p>\n
He said that port charges will be one of the topics to be
\ndiscussed in the two-day official meeting of the Brunei,
\nIndonesia, Malaysia and the Philippine East ASEAN Growth Area in
\nZamboanga, in the Philippines, this week.<\/p>\n
The forum was established to promote business cooperation
\nbetween the countries involved, especially territories that
\ndirectly border on one another: Brunei; Mindanao in the
\nPhilippines; the states of Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia; and the
\nprovinces of Maluku, North and South Sulawesi and Kalimantan in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Freddy said that many shipping businessmen in Bitung, North
\nSulawesi, have complained about the high service charges at the
\nMindanao port in the southern part of the Philippines.<\/p>\n
He said that the facilities at the Bitung port are adequate to
\nhandle exports to Mindanao, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, China,
\nSouth Korea and the United states.<\/p>\n
Freddy added that two ships, each with a 700-ton capacity,
\nhave now been linking the Bitung port and General Santos town in
\nthe southern Philippines twice a month.(04)<\/p>",
