RI participation in world pageant protested<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An academic has come out against the
\nparticipation of Indonesian women in world modeling pageants
\nabroad.<\/p>\n
The chief of the Women's Study Center at Surabaya Airlangga
\nUniversity, Sanituti Hariadi, said to the Antara news agency on
\nWednesday that the emancipation efforts of Indonesian women would
\nbe tarnished by their participation in such a contest.<\/p>\n
Sanituti also expressed regret that preparations for the
\ncontest were being made by local women.<\/p>\n
Such a pageant only serves to exploit female bodies, she said.<\/p>\n
\"Moreover, the pageant asks for the participant's physical
\nstatistics, which really has nothing to do with the purpose of
\nthe contest,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Sanituti, who is also a lecturer at the university's School of
\nSocial and Political Sciences, also expressed doubt that a model
\nwith limited intellectual abilities would be able to represent
\nIndonesia in its efforts to promote tourism abroad.<\/p>\n
Sanituti was reacting to the plan to select 15 Indonesian
\nparticipants for the New York pageant. The activity is being
\nsponsored by Putri Pertiwi and the Indonesian AIDS foundations
\nand SCTV, a privately-owned television network. The event will be
\nheld in cooperation with New York-based Elite Model Management
\nagency.<\/p>\n
Antara said that 200 local women took part in the first
\nselection rounds, which were held in June in Jakarta, Bandung and
\nSurabaya. The final round will be held in Jakarta on July 28.<\/p>\n
The first winner from Indonesia will compete against
\ncontestants from 46 countries in a grand final to be held in
\nSeoul, South Korea, next month.<\/p>\n
The ten grand final winners will be awarded contracts with
