RI painter gets ASEAN art award<\/p>\n

MANILA (JP): Yuswantoro Adi became Indonesia's first painter
\nto win in the ASEAN Art Awards, receiving the grand prize trophy
\nand a cash prize of US$10,000 from Philippine First Lady Amelita
\nM. Ramos here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Titled Masterpieces of Indonesia, Yuswantoro's piece was
\nselected from among 35 works by artists from seven countries.<\/p>\n
It was also one of five Indonesian works to reach the finals
\nin the competition which has been held four times under the
\nauspice of ASEAN.<\/p>\n
"I'm very surprised and happy," said Yuswantoro, who hails
\nfrom Yogyakarta, after receiving the prize.<\/p>\n
The seven-member jury chose four other winners: Ahmad Shukri
\nMohamed of Malaysia (Insects Diskette, mixed media); Daniel A.
\nCoquilla of the Philippines (oil), Tan Juat Lee of Singapore (A
\nWedding Gift from My Mum, oil) and Tran Van Thao of Vietnam
\n(Human Environment, oil).<\/p>\n
Indonesian jury member Amir Sidharta said Yuswantoro's work
\nwon seven of nine votes by the judges. The work of another
\nIndonesian painter, Yang Tersisa, Sebuah Panorama (A Panorama is
\nall that's left), and Air Kaki -- Doa untuk Korban Kekerasan
\n(Water of the Feet: Prayers for Victims of Violence) by Tisna
\nSanjaya, also attracted the judges in an earlier stage of the
\nfour rounds.<\/p>\n
The other entries from Indonesia were works by painters
\nNasirun and Hanura Hosea, both from Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Yuswantoro and the other four painters had earlier won the top
\nfive awards from Indonesian Art Awards 1997 organized by the
\nIndonesian Fine Arts Foundation and the Philip Morris Group.<\/p>\n
Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei Darrussalam and
\nthe Philippines also held similar national competitions. Laos,
\nMyanmar and Cambodia are expected to join in the near future.<\/p>\n
Philip Morris is also the sponsor for the ASEAN Art Awards.<\/p>\n
Jury chairwoman Mayching Kao of Chinese University in Hong
\nKong said that Yuswantoro's piece, apart from its technical
\nquality, reflected the artist's ability to create "a new
\nvocabulary".<\/p>\n
Yuswantoro integrates color in his painting of children
\nplaying with objects made of various world currencies.<\/p>\n
The piece of work, Kao said, "enables us to share with the
\nartist our social condition of being dominated by money... which
\ntranscends national boundaries."<\/p>\n
Yuswantoro said, "I just want to say that money should not be
\nour destination, just a tool... but from the minute we wake up
\nwe're always money-oriented."<\/p>\n
But, he added with a laugh, "I received money from Philip
\nMorris, and that's a different story."<\/p>\n
"I don't know what I'm going to do with the prize money yet,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
All 35 entries which made it to the finals will be on display
\nfor a month at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, after which
\nthey will be exhibited in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>",
