        "content": "<p>\u201cOur goal for national sugar production is to end white sugar\nimports. That is our target for this year,\u201d Sulaiman said in\nBandarlampung, Lampung, on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He outlined several measures the government is taking to boost\nnational sugarcane and sugar production, including optimising\nsmallholder sugarcane plantations which have been underutilised.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, roughly 86 percent of smallholder sugarcane land is\ncurrently in poor condition and requires rehabilitation to raise\nproductivity.<\/p>\n<p>Related news: Indonesian govt tightens refined sugar imports to\nprotect farmers<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strategy is to rehabilitate these smallholder plots, which make\nup 86 percent of the total area,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>He added that President Prabowo Subianto instructed his ministry to\nrevitalise neglected smallholder sugarcane land.<\/p>\n<p>In supporting the initiative, the government has allocated Rp1.7\ntrillion (around US$95.9 million) for the clearing and replanting of the\nplots across the country. In achieving the target, the government is\nalso encouraging all sugar companies to boost their production.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Acting Director General of Plantations at the Ministry,\nHeru Tri Widarto, said the sugarcane plantation area in Lampung is\ntargeted to reach 97,970 hectares by 2027. By the target in place, sugar\noutput in the province is projected to hit 480,053 metric tons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe projected production target is 480,053 metric tons of sugar.
