        "content": "<p>RI needs true statesmen<\/p>\n<p>From Rakyat Merdeka<\/p>\n<p>The key to the welfare and prosperity of a nation lies in the<br>\nwisdom of a statesman. A leader and a statesman must both be<br>\nwise.<\/p>\n<p>When a politician gains public support and reaches the apex of<br>\npower, he has legitimacy as a statesman, morally, intellectually<br>\nand spiritually. So he must not remain a politician, especially<br>\nif he can count on the support of his own group.<\/p>\n<p>The condition in Indonesia is quite alarming because, in our<br>\nopinion, there are no Indonesian leaders capable of being<br>\nstatesmen. Our leaders are only group leaders who work in the<br>\ninterest of their groups. They practice extortion in the name of<br>\nboth the people and the state as they are simply the slaves to<br>\npower.<\/p>\n<p>When a statesman makes a decision which will concern the fate<br>\nof the people, he will do it after weighing the matter<br>\nrationally, spiritually and emotionally. In this way he does<br>\nthings wisely.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, what we are witnessing in this conflict-ridden<br>\ncountry is that the decisions and the acts of the leaders are<br>\nfocused only their emotional considerations. They usually ignore<br>\nthe rational and spiritual considerations. It is not surprising,<br>\ntherefore, that their decisions will only make the people live in<br>\ngreater poverty and deeper misery.<\/p>\n<p>Worse still, our leaders no longer care that their decisions<br>\nmay benefit only their groups but are detrimental to others.<\/p>\n<p>What will happen to this country if it remains under a non-<br>\nstatesman-like leader? Very clearly it is heading towards its<br>\ndoom. Who has committed the most heinous crime: Abdurrahman<br>\nWahid, Megawati, Amien Rais or Akbar Tandjung?<\/p>\n<p>It is not easy to be a statesman, especially given the present<br>\nmulti-dimensional conflict. Armed with honesty and sincerity,<br>\nplus reasoning and mental as well as spiritual considerations, we<br>\ncan surely face anything.<\/p>\n<p>DJIWANDONO<\/p>\n<p>Bekasi, West Java<\/p>",
