        "content": "<p>RI needs to adjust laws with UN resolutions<\/p>\n<p>SEMARANG (JP): Indonesia needs to adjust its legal rulings so<br>\nthat they are more congruent with the resolutions of the United<br>\nNations' Congress on Prevention of Crime and Criminal Justice, an<br>\nexpert says.<\/p>\n<p>Muladi, chairman of the Indonesian delegation to the<br>\ncommission's meeting in Vienna last month, said the legal<br>\nauthorities should also introduce the international resolutions<br>\nwhich are not against Indonesia's national interests.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, \"Indonesia needs to be more responsive toward the<br>\nCommission's recommendations ... including establishing a<br>\ncommittee to exclusively deal with the issues of crime prevention<br>\nand criminal justice,\" he suggested yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Muladi, a member of the National Commission of Human Rights,<br>\nled the delegation of Indonesian legal experts attending the May<br>\n21 - 31 meeting of the Congress, in which 39 member countries<br>\ntook part. A total of 59 UN members attended as observers. In<br>\naddition, two non-member observers, and representatives of 10 UN<br>\nagencies, 10 inter-government institutes, and 41 non-governmental<br>\norganizations also attended.<\/p>\n<p>Last year's Congress meeting was held in Cairo, during which<br>\nparticipants pledged tighter cooperation to combat the increase<br>\nof terrorism, corruption and environmental and transnational<br>\ncrimes.<\/p>\n<p>The Congress also approved resolutions linking terrorism to<br>\norganized crime and recommended that legislation should be<br>\nupdated to keep up with the new phenomena of computer crime and<br>\ncrimes against the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Muladi said that the participants underlined the<br>\nimportant role of the Congress in mobilizing international<br>\nefforts in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.<\/p>\n<p>\"The participants also called for the establishment of an<br>\nInternational Code of Conduct to facilitate governments in the<br>\nfight against corruption,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The participants believe that concrete steps are needed to<br>\nfight corruption in order to improve the image of government<br>\nofficials,\" according to Muladi, who is also rector of Diponegoro<br>\nUniversity here.<\/p>\n<p>The participants called for greater cooperation in fighting<br>\norganized transnational crimes such as money laundering. They<br>\nalso requested exchanges of information on individual countries'<br>\ncampaigns against urban crime, juvenile delinquency and violence,<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Muladi's delegation included Indonesia's Ambassador to<br>\nAustria, Sumaryo Suryokusumo, Director general of the<br>\nAdministrative Court of the Ministry of Justice Lies Sugondo and<br>\nEast Java Police Chief Sumarsono.<\/p>\n<p>The other delegates included Army Boer of the Attorney<br>\nGeneral's Office, Bogor district court judge Djoko Sarwoko, and<br>\nthe Indonesian Councillor in Vienna, I Gde Djelantik.
