RI needs leader with vision<\/p>\n

While awaiting the special session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) scheduled for Aug. 1, 2001, it is
\nworthwhile examining the political history of Indonesia. Since
\nthe leadership of the first president, Sukarno, to the present
\nleadership of President Abdurrahman Wahid, the people's
\naspiration to be a just and prosperous nation based on the state
\nphilosophy, Pancasila, has never been fulfilled.<\/p>\n
People's democracy with a multiparty system applied during
\nSukarno's leadership increased political tension instead of the
\nnation's standard of living. Soeharto's New Order regime eased
\npolitical tension, but it was an authoritarian government,
\ntherefore the democratic system did not work.<\/p>\n
The transition from the authoritarian New Order regime to the
\nreform period occurred during Habibie's leadership with its
\nshort-lived Cabinet. And the present Cabinet, which was expected
\nto lead the nation out of the crisis, has only deepened the
\nproblems. Today, there is even the threat of national
\ndisintegration.<\/p>\n
I suggest legislatures in the MPR and the House of
\nRepresentatives do not repeat their mistake by electing the wrong
\nnational leader. The nation needs a leader who can wisely combine
\nthe mission and vision of his\/her predecessors, establish a
\ndemocratic government and implement the reform agenda for the
\nsake of the nation.<\/p>\n
