RI, Malaysian police boost cooperation<\/p>\n

North Sumatra and Aceh police signed on Friday an agreement with
\ntheir counterparts from the Malaysian states of Kedang, Perak and
\nPenang on how to deal with the increasing threats of terrorism,
\nweapons smuggling and human trafficking in their respective
\nterritories.<\/p>\n
They, however, failed to reach an agreement on how to deal
\nwith narcotics-related crimes. They agreed to discuss the issue
\nat their next meeting in April.<\/p>\n
Chief of Penang police Datuk Abu Kasim bin Mochnor said they
\nhad agreed to apply new technology to help each other capture
\nthose involved in terrorist, weapons smuggling and human
\ntrafficking activities.<\/p>\n
\"It is hoped that by using the latest technology, police from
\nboth countries can capture the suspects quickly,\" Abu Kasim said
\nafter signing the agreement here on Friday.<\/p>\n
He added that with the bilateral agreement, Malaysian police
\ncould be contacted via the radio or facsimile to help Indonesian
\npolice capture fugitives entering Malaysian territory.<\/p>\n
Based on information from the Indonesian police, the Malaysian
\npolice would arrest the fugitive and hand them over to Indonesian
\nauthorities.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and Malaysia have come under the international
\nspotlight following the deadly Bali bombing on Oct. 12 that
\nkilled over 190 people and injured some 300 others.<\/p>\n
Some terrorist suspects were Indonesians who had lived for
\nsome time in Malaysia to discuss the planning of what they called
\n\"the Islamic State\" encompassing parts of Indonesia, Malaysia,
\nthe Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
Abu Kasim emphasized that any crime that takes place in
\nMalaysian territory would be processed in accordance with
\nMalaysian laws.<\/p>\n
\"If Indonesian citizens commit crimes in Malaysia, they will
\nbe processed under Malaysian laws,\" Abu Kasim added.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the delegates from Indonesia and Malaysia
\nfailed to reach an agreement on the issue of narcotics. Abu Kasim
\ndid not elaborate, but said that the issue would be discussed
\nwhen they met in Ipoh, Malaysia, in April 2003.<\/p>\n
\"We have reached an agreement to boost cooperation between
\nIndonesian and Malaysian police,\" Abu Kasim said.<\/p>\n
The meeting was a follow-up to an earlier meeting in Penang,
\nMalaysia, on Sept. 26.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian delegation was comprised of 17 police personnel
\nfrom Aceh and North Sumatra, and four personnel from the national
\npolice headquarters, while Malaysia sent eight personnel from
\nKedah, Perak and Penang.<\/p>\n
North Sumatra deputy police chief Brig. Gen. Maman Supratman
\nsaid that both sides had agreed to organize routine meetings and
\nto improve cooperation to deal with crimes taking place in both
\ncountries.<\/p>",
