RI-Malaysia bridge to cost $2.2b<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The construction of a 95-kilometer bridge, the
\nlongest in the world, over the Strait of Malacca would cost Rp 6
\ntrillion (US$2.2 billion), a Malaysian official said.<\/p>\n
\"Malacca state has proposed construction at Kuala Linggi and
\nMerlimau in Malacca directed towards Rupat Island (Riau),\" chief
\nof Malacca State, Datuk Abu Zahar, was quoted by Antara as saying
\nin Malacca yesterday.<\/p>\n
Zahar and Governor Soeripto of Indonesia's Riau province both
\nattended a conference yesterday on the planned construction of
\nthe bridge.<\/p>\n
Both said the bridge would solidify the already close
\nrelations between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Business consortiums from both countries have agreed to team
\nup to build a bridge which would connect Malacca and Riau.<\/p>\n
The bridge would extend 42 kilometers across the Strait of
\nMalacca, then another 47 kilometers across Rupat Island, before
\nanother six-kilometer extension to mainland Riau.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian consortium, PT Malindo Transmadu, is headed by
\nSiti Hediati Heriyadi Prabowo, second daughter of President
\nSoeharto.<\/p>\n
Soeharto gave last week his approval for the project, which
\naccording to Hediati just completed a five-year feasibility
\nstudy.<\/p>\n
She did not reveal when construction would begin.<\/p>\n
Governor Soeripto said yesterday that the bridge would
\nstrengthen economic ties, noting the increasing interest of
\nMalaysian companies to invest in Riau's agricultural and real
