        "content": "<p>RI lawmakers lobby U.S. on arms<\/p>\n<p>Ivy Susanti, The Jakarta Post, Washington, DC<\/p>\n<p>Indonesian House of Representatives lawmakers held talks with<br>\nU.S. senators here on Wednesday to seek support for a full<br>\nresumption of military ties between the two countries when their<br>\ndelegates meet in a joint committee scheduled for next month.<\/p>\n<p>Andri Hadi, the Indonesian Embassy's deputy chief of mission<br>\nto the U.S., told reporters here on Tuesday that legislators Theo<br>\nSambuaga, E.E. Mangindaan and Wahidin Ismail would ask the U.S.<br>\nSenate to unconditionally remove restrictions on the export of<br>\nlethal military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate agreed in July to retain the embargo of U.S.<br>\nmilitary assistance to Indonesia for the 2006 fiscal year despite<br>\nthe Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill (HR 3057) a<br>\nmonth earlier, supporting removal of restrictions for \"lethal\"<br>\nand military equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\"We are trying very hard to convince the Senate that it is<br>\nunfair to continue the military embargo. It is also important for<br>\nthem to realize that we are not going to use the `lethal' weapons<br>\nto fight our own people, but to safeguard our territory,\" Andri<br>\ntold visiting Indonesian journalists.<\/p>\n<p>He cited Indonesia's squadron of F-16 jet fighters bought from<br>\nthe U.S., which now cannot fly due to the spare parts embargo.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian lawmakers hope to meet Senator Christopher Bond<br>\n(R-Missouri) and House members Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Washington),<br>\nRep. Robert Wexler (D-Florida), Rep. Eni Faleomavaega (D-American<br>\nSamoa), Rep. Jim Leach R-Iowa), Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Florida)<br>\nand Rep. Joseph Pitts (R-Pennsylvania).<\/p>\n<p>Wexler visited Indonesia last month, where he also met with<br>\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Congress has to pass the appropriations legislation<br>\nto finance government every fiscal year by October. A joint<br>\ncommittee consisting of members of both Houses have narrow<br>\njurisdiction over matter of joint interests.<\/p>\n<p>Also during Wednesday's meeting, Andri said the Indonesian<br>\nlegislators would voice their objections to the House's recent<br>\nrequest to U.S. state secretary and UN secretary-general to<br>\ncommence further research on Papua, specifically the referendum<br>\nin 1969 when it officially became part of Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. House of Representatives passed the HR 2601 State<br>\nDepartment Authorization Bill regarding Papua in July. The move<br>\nsparked uproar in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian lawmakers are part of President Susilo's<br>\nentourage to the U.S.  Susilo is in New York to attend the UN<br>\nSummit at the UN headquarters.<\/p>",
