        "content": "<p>RI is pondering exporting elephants<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The government, dismayed over the damage caused by<br>\nthe huge number of elephants destroying plantations and housing<br>\nareas in Sumatra, is toying with the idea of exporting the giant<br>\nbeasts.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Forestry will consult the Indonesian Institute<br>\nof Sciences (LIPI) and international organizations to explore the<br>\npossibility of exporting Sumatran elephants, ministry office<br>\nspokesman, Kardjono, was quoted by Antara news agency as saying<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The government recently culled several aging elephants in<br>\norder to curb the population and reduce damage.<\/p>\n<p>Kardjono said that he did not have precise figures on the<br>\npopulation of elephants in Sumatra, but a survey in 1985 showed<br>\nthat there were between 2,800 and 3,800 elephants in 44 regencies<br>\nof the island. Most of them were found in Lampung, Bengkulu,<br>\nSouth Sumatra, Riau and Aceh.<\/p>\n<p>A conference on how to cope with elephant-related problems<br>\nwill take place in Pekanbaru, Riau, on Sept.18.
