        "content": "<p>RI human rights worsen: Amnesty<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (AFP): The human rights situation deteriorated in<br>\nIndonesia last year with killings and torture by the security<br>\nforces undermining efforts to investigate past abuses, Amnesty<br>\nInternational said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Positive initiatives, such as efforts to investigate some<br>\npast violations of human rights, were outweighed by a marked<br>\ndeterioration in the human rights situation in areas such as (the<br>\nprovinces of) Aceh and Papua (Irian Jaya),\" the London-based<br>\nwatchdog said in its annual report.<\/p>\n<p>\"Hundreds of extrajudicial executions were reported.<br>\n'Disappearances', torture and arbitrary detention were also<br>\nwidespread, particularly in areas of opposition to Indonesian<br>\nrule,\" it said.<\/p>\n<p>The country's first full year under a democratically elected<br>\ngovernment in 40 years was marred by economic problems, which<br>\nfuelled social unrest.<\/p>\n<p>\"Against this background, the process of human rights reform<br>\nsuffered and repression was widely used by the police and<br>\nmilitary,\" it said.<\/p>\n<p>Legal and judicial institutions in Indonesia were weak and,<br>\nwith political resistance, this obstructed investigations into<br>\npast human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>This resulted in an \"atmosphere of impunity\" which undermined<br>\nefforts to improve the human rights situation in the country, the<br>\nreport said.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2000, legislation was adopted to establish Human<br>\nRights Courts, however \"the independence of the judiciary<br>\ncontinued to be undermined by corruption and by government<br>\ninterference.\"<\/p>",
