RI hosts Malay language seminar, literature congress<\/p>\n

Malay linguists and experts from Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei
\nDarussalam will gather in Makassar, South Sulawesi next week to
\ndiscuss ways to replace foreign language terms with Malay.<\/p>\n
Head of Indonesia Language Center Dendy Sugondo told The
\nJakarta Post on Wednesday that Makassar was chosen to host the
\nannual Malay language seminar and literature congress. The aims
\nof the congress would be promoting Malay terms and developing
\nMalay so that it becomes one of the major languages in the world.<\/p>\n
"We want to develop Malay so that it supports the national
\nidentity of the three countries especially in this globalization
\nera. We also would like to promote the use of local terms to
\nreplace many English or other language terms," Dendy told the
\nPost.<\/p>\n
Malay is widely spoken as a first language in Indonesia,
\nMalaysia and Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>\n
Dendy said that currently Indonesia has 250,000 local terms to
\nreplace many foreign terms, but there had been insufficient
\npromotion among the public to use such terms.<\/p>\n
"We will launch the new terms dictionary on the first day of
\nthe seminar. In the future we will also provide the new terms on
\nthe internet to make it easy for the public to access them,"
\nDendy said.<\/p>\n
The seminar will be opened by the Minister of National
\nEducation Abdul Malik Fadjar.<\/p>\n
One of the speakers will be cultural observer Emha Ainun
\nNajib.<\/p>\n
Singaporean delegates will attend as observers, which will
\nalso discuss cultures that influence the use of language.<\/p>\n
Prior to the seminar, there will be a two-day congress on
\nMalay language that will start on Friday.<\/p>\n
That will be followed by a two-day congress on Malay
\nliterature.<\/p>\n
Malaysia hosted the 2001 edition of the annual seminar. Next
\nyear's activities will be hosted by Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>",
