        "content": "<p>RI hosts Malay language seminar, literature congress<\/p>\n<p>Fabiola Desy Unidjaja<br>\nThe Jakarta Post<br>\nJakarta<\/p>\n<p>Malay linguists and experts from Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei <br>\nDarussalam will gather in Makassar, South Sulawesi next week to <br>\ndiscuss ways to replace foreign language terms with Malay.<\/p>\n<p>Head of Indonesia Language Center Dendy Sugondo told The <br>\nJakarta Post on Wednesday that Makassar was chosen to host the <br>\nannual Malay language seminar and literature congress. The aims <br>\nof the congress would be promoting Malay terms and developing <br>\nMalay so that it becomes one of the major languages in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We want to develop Malay so that it supports the national <br>\nidentity of the three countries especially in this globalization <br>\nera. We also would like to promote the use of local terms to <br>\nreplace many English or other language terms,&quot; Dendy told the <br>\nPost.<\/p>\n<p>Malay is widely spoken as a first language in Indonesia, <br>\nMalaysia and Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>\n<p>Dendy said that currently Indonesia has 250,000 local terms to <br>\nreplace many foreign terms, but there had been insufficient <br>\npromotion among the public to use such terms.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will launch the new terms dictionary on the first day of <br>\nthe seminar. In the future we will also provide the new terms on <br>\nthe internet to make it easy for the public to access them,&quot; <br>\nDendy said.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar will be opened by the Minister of National <br>\nEducation Abdul Malik Fadjar.<\/p>\n<p>One of the speakers will be cultural observer Emha Ainun <br>\nNajib.<\/p>\n<p>Singaporean delegates will attend as observers, which will <br>\nalso discuss cultures that influence the use of language.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the seminar, there will be a two-day congress on <br>\nMalay language that will start on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That will be followed by a two-day congress on Malay <br>\nliterature.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia hosted the 2001 edition of the annual seminar. Next <br>\nyear&apos;s activities will be hosted by Brunei Darussalam.<\/p>",
