        "content": "<p>RI hopes U.S. will lift embargo<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The foreign ministry expressed the hope on Friday<br>\nthat the United States would end its military embargo against<br>\nIndonesia by October this year as the country had taken the<br>\nnecessary measures to reform its military (TNI).<\/p>\n<p>\"The lifting of the embargo will enable us to buy lethal<br>\nmilitary equipment from the U.S.,\" Ministry of Foreign Affairs<br>\nDirector for North and Central America Dino Pati Djalal said on<br>\nFriday.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Congress is due to reconvene in October.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. imposed a military embargo against Indonesia in 1999<br>\nfollowing the TNI's failure to contain bloodthirsty rampages by<br>\npro-Indonesian militiamen before, during and after the United<br>\nNations-sponsored referendum in East Timor.<\/p>\n<p>However the embargo has been gradually lifted since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>Dino said Indonesia had submitted a list of non-lethal<br>\nmilitary equipment it wanted to buy, including spare parts, from<br>\nthe U.S. --JP<\/p>",
