RI-HK firms to operate Bojonegara seaport<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian and Hong Kong firms created PT Teluk
\nBanten Peti Kemas Indonesia here yesterday to develop and operate
\nthe 1,200-hectare port in Bojonegara, West Java, which will cost
\na total of US$700 million to build.<\/p>\n
The incorporation deeds for the joint venture were signed by
\nstate-owned PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II's president, Amir Harbani,
\nPT Bina Jasa Hantarindo's president, Bob Hippy, and the head of
\nbusiness development for Hutchison Port Holdings of Hong Kong,
\nEddie E.G. Teh.<\/p>\n
The new company is 30 percent owned by Pelabuhan II, 25
\npercent by Bina Jasa, which is owned by President Soeharto's son
\nBambang Trihatmodjo, and 45 percent by Hutchison.<\/p>\n
Hippy said yesterday Teluk Banten Peti Kemas Indonesia had a
\npaid-up capital of $60 million.<\/p>\n
Several foreign companies, including International Container
\nServices of the Philippines, Patrick Stevedoring of Australia and
\nthe Hamburg Port Authority of Germany, had expressed interest in
\nthe Bojonegara project.<\/p>\n
Teh said Hutchison managed 15 ports, including the Felixtowe
\nport in Britain, the Balboa Cristobal port on the Panama Canal,
\nthe Freeport port in the Bahamas and the Shanghai and the Yantian
\ncontainer terminals in China.<\/p>\n
\"The Bojonegara port, expected to ease traffic at Jakarta's
\nTanjung Priok port, would be almost twice the size of the 600-
\nhectare Tanjung Priok,\" Harbani noted.<\/p>\n
Tanjung Priok has two container terminals. A third terminal,
\nrequiring much land reclamation, is being developed by PT
\nManggala Krida Yuda, a subsidiary of the Humpuss Group which is
\ncontrolled by President Soeharto's youngest son, Hutomo Mandala
\nPutra.<\/p>\n
Tanjung Priok cannot berth container ships with a draft over
\n12 meters or a capacity over 2,500 twenty-feet equivalent units
\n(TEUs). The port has been frequently criticized for its
\ninefficiency and heavy red tape which cause congestion.<\/p>\n
The Bojonegara port in Banten regency, scheduled to be fully
\ncompleted in 2007, is designed to accommodate the latest
\ngeneration of container ships with a draft of up to 18 meters and
\na capacity over 6,000 TEUs.<\/p>\n
Teluk Banten Peti Kemas Indonesia will run the Bojonegara port
\nunder a 30-year build, operate and transfer contract. The port
\nwill include a bulk grain terminal, a bulk liquid terminal and
\nother commercial facilities.<\/p>\n
The port is expected to handle up to 2.4 million TEUs yearly.
