EGYPT: Indonesia has extradited an Egyptian who organized a
\ndoomed voyage to Australia for hundreds of asylum-seekers in
\nOctober 2001, according to judicial sources in Cairo on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Mutaz Attia Mohammad Hasan, also known as Abu Quassey, was
\nhanded over to the Egyptian authorities, who have been seeking
\nhis extradition for the past year, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Australia had also been seeking the extradition of Abu
\nQuassey, who was held at an immigration detention center in
\nIndonesia after serving a six-month prison sentence for visa
\nviolations.<\/p>\n
He has admitted he organized the October 2001 voyage that led
\nto the death of some 350 mostly Iraqi asylum-seekers as they
\nheaded for Australia in a dilapidated and overcrowded boat that

CHINA: A 24-hour news channel run by China's state television
\nwent on the air on Thursday in a step that some say could
\nrevolutionize the communist government's bland, tightly
\ncontrolled media.<\/p>\n
The CCTV News Channel promises faster, more comprehensive
\ncoverage, though it waited until four hours into its debut
\nbroadcast to mention the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
\noutbreak, which has killed at least 170 people in China and
\ninfected thousands.<\/p>\n
The new channel follows the Western model of live reports with
\nstylishly groomed anchors seated in front of a bustling newsroom
\nand jazzy synthesized theme music. The program includes current
\naffairs, business, arts and sports.<\/p>\n
At the top of the 7 a.m. news, one hour after the channel went
\non air, a reporter called in from Peking University's flag-
\nraising ceremony. The program also reported on developments in
\nIraq and Middle East peace efforts with a report by telephone

GERMANY: German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will travel to Asia
\nin May despite the outbreak of SARS but will take a much smaller
\ndelegation than planned, a government spokesman said on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Scientists had told the government a large delegation could
\nlead to problems, so Schroeder will only be traveling with
\neconomics minister Wolfgang Clement, Siemens AG chief Heinrich
\nvon Pierer and a small group of civil servants.<\/p>\n
He had planned to take 120 people with him, including
\njournalists and business executives from other firms.<\/p>\n
Schroeder plans to visit Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and

SOUTH AFRICA: Up to 80 people are feared dead after a bus plunged
\ninto a reservoir in South Africa's central Free State province on

\npulled from the wreckage,\" police spokesman Sam Sesing said
\nshortly after arriving at the scene of the accident scene outside

The bus was transporting about 90 members of the Congress of
\nSouth African Trade Unions from Northern Province to a May Day
