JAKARTA: The government will try to verify the citizenship of
\na man arrested in Manila over his alleged links with the al-Qaeda
\nnetwork, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Hassan said the government will not speculate about the status
\nof Fathur Rohman al-Gozhi, a member of the Jamaah Islamiyah
\nMuslim organization -- who was recently arrested by the police in
\na rented house in the Philippines capital -- until his
\nnationality is determined.<\/p>\n
\"According to a report in a Singapore media, this man has
\nresided in Singapore for quite a while and is married to a
\nMalaysian... Is this man still an Indonesian national?\" he asked,
\nafter accompanying a UN human rights official to meet President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n
\"The Indonesian embassy in Manila is still trying to clarify
\nthe man's status,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Reports said that al-Ghozi was arrested by the police on Jan.
\n15, after receiving a tip-off from Singapore that the man is a
\nkey leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah, an Islamic terror group
\noperating in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Philippine police also said they believed al-Ghozi had links
\nto al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n
After his arrest, the police seized a cache of explosives and
\nweapons in the Southern Philippines.<\/p>\n
Al-Ghozi is also suspected of providing funding and bomb
\ncomponents for the bombings of Manila in December 2000 that
\nclaimed more than a dozen lives.<\/p>\n
On the allegations, Hassan said, \"We shouldn't connect
\neverything with the al-Qaeda,\" -- JP<\/p>",
