RI gets qualifiers for show jumping<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has been chosen to host two of the
\neight stages in the Southeast Asian zone qualifying round of the
\nVolvo Cup world show jumping championships.<\/p>\n
Bo Helander, the secretary-general of the International
\nEquestrian Federation (FEI), said Tuesday the first stage of the
\nchampionships would be held in Ciater, West Java, on Sept. 7 and
\nthe second stage would be at Arthayasa Stable in Cinere, on the
\nsouthern outskirts of the capital, on Sept. 14.<\/p>\n
Indonesian show jumper Rafiq Hakim said during a breaking of
\nthe fast Tuesday that he was optimistic Indonesia would win the
\nSoutheast Asian zone championships.<\/p>\n
"The world show jumping championships will use the concept of
\nFormula One car racing which will make riders perform
\nprofessionally," Rafiq was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Indra Rosendi, Rafiq Hakim Radinal, Ardy Hapsoro, Roy Ibrahim
\nand Tenny Palandeng are expected to represent Indonesia at the
\ntwo events.<\/p>\n
The eight best riders from the eight stages in the Southeast
\nAsian zone will qualify for the finals of the world show jumping
\nchampionships in Helsinki, Finland in 1998.<\/p>\n
Helander said that Singapore would host one stage, Malaysia
\nwould host three and Thailand would host two stages of
\ncompetition for the Southeast Asian zone.<\/p>\n
The first stage of this year's Southeast Asian zone
\ncompetition will be in Malaysia in August. Singapore will host
\nthe second stage.<\/p>\n
"Indonesia, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries have
\nshown progress in equestrian sport, especially show jumping. The
\ncoming championships in Indonesia will come as a trial test for
\nSoutheast Asian riders in the 1998 Asian Games," Helander said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto Cup<\/p>\n
In another equestrian sport, North Sulawesi will host the
\nsecond stage of the Soeharto Cup national horse racing
\nchampionship in September.<\/p>\n
J.F. Kumurur, the chairman of the North Sulawesi regional
\noffice of the Indonesian Equestrian Association, said in Manado
\nyesterday that preparations were being made for the event.<\/p>\n
"The championship will be held at a time when North Sulawesi
\nis celebrating its 33rd anniversary. The event is very important
\nfor the province to defend its title. North Sulawesi has won
\ntwice, in 1995 and 1996," Kumurur said.<\/p>\n
The event will be held at the Maesa race track in
\nPinabetengan, Tompaso.<\/p>\n
The first stage of the national horse racing championship will
\nbe held at Pulomas, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"North Sulawesi will try to collect as many points as possible
\nin the first stage to ease its way for the second stage. If North
\nSulawesi wins the Soeharto Cup for the third time, the province
\nis entitled to keep the trophy forever," Kumurur said. (lnt)<\/p>",
