RI gets good marks for its war on terrorism<\/p>\n

Indonesia, a major victim of terrorism, received good marks
\nduring an international conference in Semarang, Central Java, on
\npromoting international cooperation on counterterrorism for its
\nstrong determination to wage a war against terrorism.<\/p>\n
While supporting Indonesia's efforts to battle terrorism, the
\n3rd ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Conference on Counterterrorism,
\nwhich was held from Nov. 14 to Nov. 15, considered plans to set
\nup a computerized alert system on terrorist threats among ASEM
\npartners.<\/p>\n
\"The conference acknowledged Indonesia's resolute efforts in
\ncombating terrorism. Particularly, the recent breakthrough in
\ntracking down the terrorists in Indonesia was a success of
\ninternational cooperation in developing capacity-building and
\ncapability through the sharing of technology, know-how and
\nintelligence information,\" Yuli Mumpuni, director for American
\nand European intra-regional cooperation, said in an e-mail sent
\nto The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The two-day conference was attended by 95 delegates from the
\ntwo continents as well as representatives from the Jakarta Center
\nfor Law Enforcement Cooperation, South East Asia Regional Center
\nfor Counter-Terrorism, Interpol and the United Nations Office on
\nDrugs and Crime (UNODC).<\/p>\n
Sponsored by Indonesia, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany,
\nItaly, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Poland, Singapore,
\nSpain, the United Kingdom and the European Commission, the
\nconference was held only four days after the most wanted
\nterrorist in the region, Azahari bin Husin, was killed during a
\npolice raid near Malang, East Java.<\/p>\n
Azahari, who holds a doctorate from the University of Reading
\nin Great Britain, was believed to be the mastermind behind
\nseveral terror attacks in the country over the last three years.<\/p>\n
Currently, the Indonesian Police are still striving hard to
\ncatch another terrorist, Noordin M. Top, and his associates
\nfollowing the death of Azahari.<\/p>\n
The Semarang conference, which was opened by Director General
\nfor American and European Affairs Arizal Effendi, and chaired by
\nRhousdy Soeriaatmadja, head of international cooperation at the
\nIndonesian Coordinating Counterterrorism Desk, was a follow-up to
\nthe ASEM Declaration on Cooperation against International
\nTerrorism issued at the fourth ASEM summit in Copenhagen in 2002.<\/p>\n
The two regions have so far hosted three conferences. The
\nfirst ASEM conference was held in Beijing in 2003, which came up
\nwith a plan to set up a network of ASEM antiterrorism contact
\npoints, while the second meeting was held in Berlin in 2004.<\/p>\n
The statement said that the Semarang conference also evaluated
\nthe progress of ASEM cooperation on counterterrorism as agreed in
\nBerlin, such as cooperation on border controls and security,
\nenhancing law enforcement cooperation, and cooperation among
\nregional centers in counterterrorism.<\/p>\n
The delegations from the two regions are also scheduled to
\nmeet in Copenhagen in 2006. Results of the Semarang and
\nCopenhagen conference will be presented at the Sixth ASEM Summit
\nin Finland in 2006.<\/p>",
