RI foreign policy enters a new phase<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas said
\nyesterday that the start of the Second Long Term Development Plan
\n(PJPT II) marks a new era in the country's foreign policy.<\/p>\n
\"It's quite clear that not only domestically are we closing an
\nera, but in terms of international relations and foreign policy
\nwe too are entering a transitional phase,\" Alatas said
\nelaborating on President Soeharto's state address to the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) on Aug. 16.<\/p>\n
Speaking after meeting with visiting foreign journalists at
\nhis office, Alatas explained that new obstacles and challenges in
\nthe international sphere face the country in the years to come.<\/p>\n
\"If we aren't in a new era yet, then we're definitely entering
\na transitional stage leading into one,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In his State of the Nation address, President Soeharto said
\nthat with the end of the Cold War era, the focus has shifted to
\ndeveloping a better and more equitable economic order.<\/p>\n
However, the President warned that, \"the advanced countries
\nare trying to arrange the global economy by themselves.\"<\/p>\n
\"In such a world evolution, there is every possibility the
\nadvanced countries will become more advanced and the
\nunderdeveloped countries more underdeveloped,\" Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
For that reason, Soeharto said the Non-Aligned Movement, which
\nhe currently chairs, is mobilizing solidarity and forces in a
\nnon-confrontational approach so developing countries are not left
\neven further behind.<\/p>\n
Alatas said that as Indonesia celebrates its 49th anniversary,
\nthe nation should brace itself for new conventions prevailing in
\nworld politics.<\/p>\n
\"We are entering a phase where the assumptions, rules and
\npolicies which divided the world in two are no longer
\napplicable,\" he said. \"A new philosophy is needed to brave the
\nfresh challenges ahead.\" (mds)<\/p>",
