RI-E. Timor military ties unlikely<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The former military emergency commander in East
\nTimor, Lt. Gen. Kiki Syahnakri, said here on Friday that
\npsychological constraints would hamper efforts to promote
\nmilitary relations with the new state of East Timor.<\/p>\n
\"In other fields, such as politics, the economy and culture,
\nrelations can be readily developed. But in military cooperation
\nand relations, I think there will be psychological constraints,\"
\nKiki said.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that he had been involved in numerous battles
\nwith both East Timor Armed Forces commander Matan Ruak and
\npresident-elect Xanana Gusmao, when the Indonesian Military (TNI)
\nwas fighting separatist groups in the territory.<\/p>\n
\"During an operation in Matebean, my troops engaged in armed
\nclashes with Xanana Gusmao a few times,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Kiki said he believed Indonesia and East Timor might some day
\nenjoy good military relations, following the development of a
\npolitical relationship between the two nations.<\/p>\n
He also agreed that Xanana Gusmao was in a good position to
\nunderstand the \"spirit\" of the Indonesian people and state. --
