RI doctoral students arrive in Australia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The first six of an eventual 145 Indonesian
\ndoctoral students have arrived in Australia to take part in a
\ncourse at the University of Tasmania's School of Education.<\/p>\n
The group of six are all teachers from the IKIP Teachers
\nCollege in Padang, West Sumatra, and have enrolled in the
\nUniversity of Tasmania's in-service education doctorate course.<\/p>\n
David Lloyd, Director of the university's Office of
\nInternational and Commercial Services, said the course emerged
\nfrom discussions in 1993, when IKIP Padang approached the
\nuniversity for help in upgrading the qualifications of its
\nteaching staff.<\/p>\n
The agreement allows IKIP teaching staff to study the first
\npart of their three-year program in Tasmania. The final part of
\ntheir program will be completed in Indonesia and will largely be
\ndedicated to research, with the remaining coursework left for
\nsummer school.<\/p>\n
"IKIP and the University of Tasmania will jointly supervise
\nthe research component," Lloyd said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n
"The students will be able to apply the theoretical skills
\ngained during the course after they return to Padang for the
\nresearch component of the course," Lloyd said.<\/p>\n
The students will produce theses concentrating on the
\ndevelopment of education services in West Sumatra, which is
\nexpected to contribute to the work of policy planners in the
\nregion.<\/p>\n
Over the next seven years, 145 IKIP teachers are expected to
\ntake the course. The current group of students were chosen for
\ntheir high levels of English proficiency.<\/p>\n
Australian students from the University of Tasmania will also
\nstudy at IKIP Padang. Next January, a group of 75 Indonesian
\nlanguage students from around Australia will travel to Padang to
\ntake part in a six-week summer program in Indonesian language and
