RI defers signing ICC Statute<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Indonesia will not ratify the Rome Statute of the
\nInternational Criminal Court (ICC) until after the country has
\nreformed the current judicial system, a senior official said.<\/p>\n
Eddy Setiabudi, an official at the directorate of security and
\nregional affairs of the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that ICC
\nwas only an alternative after the existing judicial system was no
\nlonger independent or effective.<\/p>\n
\"We will ratify it after countries that have ratified it
\nimplement the Rome Statute. Besides, big countries like the U.S.,
\nJapan, China, Russia, and India have not ratified the Statute,\"
\nhe said in a discussion.<\/p>\n
ICC, which came into effect on July 1, 2002, has international
\njurisdiction over gross violations of human rights such as
\ngenocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of
\naggression.<\/p>\n
Some women activists said in the discussion that the
\nratification of the Statute could break the culture of impunity
\nthat often allowed violations to go unpunished. --JP<\/p>",
