RI could become major business player<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia could become a major business player
\nin the Asia-Pacific if its rapid economic growth continued, a
\nsenior executive of the Paris-based International Chamber of
\nCommerce (ICC) executive said yesterday.<\/p>\n
ICC secretary-general Maria Livanos Cattaui said Indonesia's
\nrapid growth in the last 10 years indicated it had the potential
\nto become one of the region's most powerful trading nations.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the end of her three-day visit, Cattaui said
\nIndonesia's success in developing its economy in the past years
\nwas one reason she visited Indonesia.<\/p>\n
She said the remarkable development in Indonesia and other
\nASEAN nations had become ICC's focus, which used to concentrate
\nonly on Europe.<\/p>\n
ASEAN nations had become important ICC constituencies.<\/p>\n
ASEAN's groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,
\nSingapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
\"Since its establishment in 1919, ICC has been focusing on the
\neconomies of European countries, but the ASEAN region has become
\nthe most dynamic part of the world economically,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Besides promoting economic growth Indonesia should be able
\ndistribute it's wealth more equally.<\/p>\n
\"Most importantly, businesses must be aware of their potential
\nresponsibility and strength,\" she said, adding that businesses
\nhas a much bigger role than the government in determining a
\ncountry's economic progress.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's economy has grown by between 7 and 8 percent a
\nyear in the last five years.<\/p>\n
Other challenges facing Indonesia includes the uncertainty of
\nits laws, especially those regarding trade and the implementation
\nof the new intellectual property rights law.<\/p>\n
Cattaui left Jakarta for Hong Kong yesterday, after meeting
\nchairman of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Aburizal
\nBakrie and ICC national committee chairman Hashim
\nDjojohadikusumo.<\/p>\n
She will visit the new branch of ICC in Bangkok.<\/p>\n
ICC groups thousands of companies of all size in over 130
