RI contributes to world summit fund<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia is contributing US$50,000 to a special
\nfund set up by the organizers of the upcoming World Summit for
\nSocial Development which will take place in Copenhagen in March.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's contribution was announced by its representative
\nat the just concluded third and final preparatory committee
\nmeeting for the summit in the Danish capital last month, the
\nUnited Nations Information Center said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The fund is intended to support the participation of
\ndeveloping countries in the Summit, it said.<\/p>\n
Indonesian President Soeharto, who currently chairs the Non-
\nAligned Movement of 111 developing countries, is widely expected
\nto take part in the summit, scheduled for March 6-12.<\/p>\n
Danish Minister for Development Cooperation Poul Nielson,
\naddressing the preparatory meeting, said the success of the
\nsummit would be secured in terms of attendance at the highest
\npolitical level.<\/p>\n
An Indonesian representative was elected as one of the nine
\nvice chairmen of the preparatory committee, the statement said
\nwithout giving his or her name. The committee is chaired by Juan
\nO. Somavia of Chile and the other eight vice chairmen came from
\nAustralia, Cameroon, India, Latvia, Mexico, the Netherlands,
\nPoland and Zimbabwe. Denmark, as the host country for the summit,
\nis an ex-officio vice chairman.<\/p>\n
The preparatory committee meeting which wound up on Jan. 28
\napproved the draft declaration and the draft program of action
\nwhich will be submitted to the summit.<\/p>\n
It will be the first ever meeting at the level of heads of
\nstate and government with the expressed objective of confronting
\nthe issues of poverty, unemployment and social exclusion -- for a
\nbetter life for all peoples of the world.<\/p>\n
Contentious issues include references to problems of the
\ncountries in transition to a market economy; the foreign debt
\nproblem of developing countries; financial resources for social
\ndevelopment; the right of development; the family; and the
\nimplementation and follow up of the summit's outcome by the
\nUnited Nations system.<\/p>\n
The draft declaration and draft program of action stress the
\nurgent need to address in all countries the structural causes and
\ndistressing consequences of \"profound social problems\",
\nparticularly poverty, unemployment and social exclusion.<\/p>\n
Recommended to be taken at the national, international and
\nUnited Nations level are actions aimed at eliminating
\ninequalities within and among countries as they breed resentment
\nand unrest among people leading to threats to the security of
\nnations, hampering economic development and impeding a lasting
\npeace.<\/p>\n
The four-part draft declaration contains a set of commitments
\nwhich would be the basis for the international community's drive
\nfor social progress and development. They address the core issues
\nof the summit -- poverty, unemployment and social integration --
\nand matters directly related to them, including the impact of
\nstructural adjustment programs on social development.<\/p>",
