RI completing SEA Games team line-up<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian National Sports Council (KONI) is
\ncompleting its final selection for the 18th Southeast Asian
\nGames, after receiving the names of 455 athletes yesterday.<\/p>\n
The council is now waiting for the Indonesian Judo Association
\nto submit the number of its athletes who are eligible for the
\nGames in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in December.<\/p>\n
\"We hope to hear their final decision on Thursday,\" an
\nofficial at KONI, Doddy Suwandi, said.<\/p>\n
The association has delayed submitting its team line-up,
\nsaying that it needs time to evaluate the performance of its
\nathletes during their recent final tryouts. The judo team of 20
\nreturned home from their overseas stint in South Korea, Japan and
\nChinese Taipei over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Doddy also noted the oversized soccer team announced by the
\nAll-Indonesia Soccer Federation (PSSI), which listed 20 booters
\ninstead of the 18 required in international competitions.<\/p>\n
The quota ruling applies to the World Cup, Asian Games and
\neven the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n
Dody said host Thailand might have made some exceptions to the
\nrule. \"I don't know for sure, but I have heard that Thailand made
\nit possible for booters' names to be submitted within six hours
\nprior to the competition,\" Doddy said.<\/p>\n
Apparently the PSSI has been having difficulty in selecting
\nthe booters, he added.<\/p>\n
The PSSI was not available for comment yesterday. Its SEA
\nGames-bound team, which consists of 20 booters, left for Beijing
\non Sunday for a friendly match against China's Olympic Games
\nteam, scheduled for Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Doddy said there was also a discrepancy on the name list for
\nthe cycling team. The Indonesian Cycling team mistakenly included
\nan official's name, Didi Sedijanto, among its team members, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
National SEA Games cycling team manager Sofyan Ruzian told The
\nJakarta Post that Didi's inclusion on the list was a printing
\nerror. \"Didi is one of our officials. So we are going to send
\nonly 19 athletes,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The association's SEA Games-bound cyclists have been in
\nAustralia for tryouts and training since Sept. 3. They will be
\nback home on Nov. 29.<\/p>\n
In the Oceania Games in Townsville, which started on Sept. 16,
\nthey gave impressive performances. In the games' first division,
\nNurhayati won the gold medal in the women's 10 kilometer scratch
\nrace and Herijanto Setjawan the bronze medal in the men's 40km
\npoint race.<\/p>\n
In the second division, Teguh Eko Pambudi won the men's 4,000
\nmeter individual pursuit, Andre Sudradjat won the men's 200m
\nsprint and Henri Setijawan won the men's 50km international time
\ntrial.<\/p>\n
The first division featured competitions against Australia and
\nNew Zealand, while the second division featured competitions
\nagainst Southeast Asian countries only.<\/p>\n
In addition, the SEA Games-bound cyclists are also there for
\ntraining at the Adelaide Institute of Sport. They are training
\nunder the supervision of cycling consultant Shane Bannan, who
\ncoached them earlier in the year in Jakarta. (arf)<\/p>\n
