RI coach draws up new strategy for Sudirman Cup<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia is preparing a special strategy to
\nface Danish, South Korean and Chinese shuttlers in the Sudirman
\nCup badminton championship in Glasgow, Scotland, from May 19 to
\nMay 25.<\/p>\n
The national men's singles coach, Indra Gunawan, said the
\nstrategy would be in accordance with the players' conditions.<\/p>\n
"The condition of the players is the most important thing we
\nhave to be aware of in applying the special strategy. Our main
\nconcern is when one of the players is injured during practice,"
\nIndra said.<\/p>\n
Indra was talking about Joko Suprianto, who injured his left
\nleg while practicing with Indra Wijaya. Joko then injured his
\nthigh and did not compete in the final round of last December's
\nGrand Prix in Bali.<\/p>\n
Joko is now fit and ready for the Sudirman Cup. But Indra
\nhopes he will not be injured in the coming championship.<\/p>\n
Indra did not explain the strategy which Indonesia would use
\nin the Sudirman Cup but said it included changing injured
\nplayers.<\/p>\n
Joko is Indonesia's main hope to win the mixed-team Sudirman
\nCup championship.<\/p>\n
"Joko is our backbone, especially when facing Chinese players
\nlike Dong Jong and Sun Jun," Indra was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) recently named
\n31 players for the Sudirman Cup and world championships.<\/p>\n
The world championships will also be in Glasgow, from May 26
\nto June 1.<\/p>\n
Joko, Indra, Hariyanto Arbi, Alan Budikusuma, Budi Santoso
\nwill compete in the men's singles. Mia Audina, Susi Susanti,
\nMeiluawati and Cindana will contest the women's singles.<\/p>\n
Chandra Wijaya\/Sigit Budiarto, Ricky Subagja\/Rexy Mainaky,
\nAntonius\/Denny Kantono and Tony Gunawan\/Victor Wibowo in the
\nmen's doubles. Eliza\/Zelin Rosiana, Indarti Isolina\/Deyana Lomban
\nand Etty Tantri\/Cynthia will play in the women's doubles.<\/p>\n
Tri Kusherjanto\/Minarti Timur, Imam Tohari\/Emma Ermawati,
\nSandiarto\/Finarsih and Flandy Limpele\/Etty Tantri will team up in
\nthe mixed doubles.<\/p>\n
Six countries will contest the Sudirman Cup. They are
\ndefending champion China, Indonesia, Denmark, South Korea,
\nEngland and Sweden.<\/p>\n
China will send 28 shuttlers to the tournament, including
\nmen's All England winner Dong Jiong and runner-up Sun Jun and
\nwomen's singles stars Ye Zhaoying and Gong Zhichao.<\/p>\n
Anniversary<\/p>\n
PBSI celebrated its 46th anniversary yesterday at the training
\ncenter in Cipayung, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The anniversary was highlighted by the visit to Sudirman's
\ngrave at Tanah Kusir, South Jakarta. The association's chairman,
\nSoerjadi, along with PBSI officials and shuttlers visited the
\ngrave.<\/p>\n
Sudirman was a former PBSI chairman.<\/p>\n
Soerjadi said in his brief speech at the anniversary that the
\nshuttlers must work hard to capture both the Sudirman Cup and
\nworld championship titles.<\/p>\n
"I will not promise any bonuses to the players participating
