        "content": "<p>RI-China small business promotion<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesia-China Foundation for Economic,<br>\nSocial and Cultural Cooperation will discuss cooperation among<br>\nthe small and medium-scale businesses of the two countries in its<br>\nannual meeting in Beijing from Aug. 2 to Aug. 7.<\/p>\n<p>\"After 10 years of conducting direct trade between Indonesia<br>\nand China, it is about time for the two nations to promote the<br>\ninvolvement of their small-scale and medium-scale businesses in<br>\neconomic cooperation,\" the foundation's executive chairman,<br>\nNamawi, said here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the foundation's Industry, Trade and Investment<br>\nDivision, Chris D. Walean, said that the business cooperation<br>\nbetween Indonesia and China increased sharply after the<br>\nresumption of direct trade in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries, which froze diplomatic relations in 1967,<br>\nnormalized their ties in 1990, several years after the direct<br>\ntrade resumption sponsored by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce<br>\nand Industry.<\/p>\n<p>\"The two-way trade between Indonesia and China was recorded at<br>\nonly US$330 million in 1985 and increased to US$2.65 billion in<br>\n1994,\" Chris said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the trade could be increased further if the two<br>\ncountries overcame obstacles, including a lack of information on<br>\neach other's products and the prohibition on the use of Chinese<br>\ncharacters in business catalogs in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia's exports to China consist mostly of oil and<br>\nplywood.<\/p>\n<p>Nawawi said Indonesia's delegation to the foundation's annual<br>\nmeeting will consist of 50 executives led by Sukamdani Sahid<br>\nGitosardjono, the foundation's chairman.<\/p>\n<p>Various issues, including investment opportunities and<br>\nprotection, as well as trade, will be discussed at the meeting,<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulties Chinese face in getting visas to Indonesia<br>\nwill also be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the foundation plans to celebrate the 10th<br>\nanniversary of the resumption of direct trade between the two<br>\ncountries.
