RI-China relations<\/p>\n
Many foreign investors have distanced themselves from
\nIndonesia, though their presence is required to keep the wheels
\nof the national economy turning. One of the reasons is that the
\neconomic situation in Indonesia is no longer conducive.<\/p>\n
It is still a big question as to when they will invest in
\nIndonesia again because, according to estimates, Indonesia will
\nstill not have recovered from the crisis in 2002.<\/p>\n
It is certainly not effective to keep on waiting until they
\nchange their attitude. We must take proactive steps to attract
\nforeign investors and that does not always mean those from the
\nwestern hemisphere.<\/p>\n
The recent close and meaningful relationship between Indonesia
\nand China is a step in the right direction, as marked by the
\nvisit of President Megawati Soekarnoputri to China and by Prime
\nMinister Zhu Rongji to Indonesia after attending the APEC meeting
\nin Brunei Darussalam last November.<\/p>\n
China has become one of the major powers in the world,
\ncompeting against the United States, Europe and Japan. China's
\nannual exports to Indonesia amounts to US$3.06 billion while it
\nannually imports some $4.4 billion from this country.<\/p>\n
With its economic strength, China has become an important
\npower to be reckoned with. On the one hand, China's products
\ncould threaten similar products made by Indonesia, while on the
\nother hand, China could become the necessary investor required
\nfor infrastructure projects in this country.<\/p>\n
Hence, it is time for a more active economic relationship
\nbetween the two countries.<\/p>\n
