RI, Canadian rights bodies link up<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Leaders of human rights commissions from
\nIndonesia and Canada met yesterday to discuss possible
\ncooperation in their work.<\/p>\n
Ali Said, the chairman of Indonesia's National Commission on
\nHuman Rights, and Maxwell Yalden, Chief Commissioner of the
\nCanadian Human Rights Commission agreed to share their experience
\nin enforcing human rights.<\/p>\n
Marzuki Darusman, deputy chairman of the Indonesian
\ncommission, explained that the meeting reviewed a number of areas
\nwhere cooperation seemed possible, such as in the exchange of
\npersonnel, making comparative studies, providing training and
\nworkshops, publications and information, and developing human
\nrights centers at universities.<\/p>\n
"After reviewing those matters, I hope we will get a
\nmemorandum of understanding on cooperative activities," he said.<\/p>\n
The Canadian commission is particularly experienced in
\nhandling problems of discrimination, while Indonesia does not
\nfind discrimination, be it ethnic or religious discrimination, a
\nparticular problem in this country, Marzuki said.<\/p>\n
He said the Indonesian commission has been quite active in
\npromoting human rights since it began its work a year ago. "We do
\nnot only supervise human rights issues, but also mediating,
\nconciliating, and resolving the problem."<\/p>\n
Marzuki said the Indonesian commission is limiting its work to
\ncases within its national boundary. "The commission has no right
\nto poke its nose into human rights situation in another country."<\/p>\n
Canada has been at the forefront of the human rights campaign
\nand at one time even suspended financial assistance to Indonesia,
\nalleging violations of human rights in East Timor.<\/p>\n
But Yalden told The Jakarta Post that he did not raise
\nspecific human rights issues during his meeting with Ali Said. "I
\nwon't comment on the human rights situation and I don't have any
\nrecommendation on what to do," he said. (29)<\/p>",
