        "content": "<p>RI, Canadian rights bodies link up<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Leaders of human rights commissions from<br>\nIndonesia and Canada met yesterday to discuss possible<br>\ncooperation in their work.<\/p>\n<p>Ali Said, the chairman of Indonesia&apos;s National Commission on<br>\nHuman Rights, and Maxwell Yalden, Chief Commissioner of the<br>\nCanadian Human Rights Commission agreed to share their experience<br>\nin enforcing human rights.<\/p>\n<p>Marzuki Darusman, deputy chairman of the Indonesian<br>\ncommission, explained that the meeting reviewed a number of areas<br>\nwhere cooperation seemed possible, such as in the exchange of<br>\npersonnel, making comparative studies, providing training and<br>\nworkshops, publications and information, and developing human<br>\nrights centers at universities.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;After reviewing those matters, I hope we will get a<br>\nmemorandum of understanding on cooperative activities,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian commission is particularly experienced in<br>\nhandling problems of discrimination, while Indonesia does not<br>\nfind discrimination, be it ethnic or religious discrimination, a<br>\nparticular problem in this country, Marzuki said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the Indonesian commission has been quite active in<br>\npromoting human rights since it began its work a year ago. &quot;We do<br>\nnot only supervise human rights issues, but also mediating,<br>\nconciliating, and resolving the problem.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Marzuki said the Indonesian commission is limiting its work to<br>\ncases within its national boundary. &quot;The commission has no right<br>\nto poke its nose into human rights situation in another country.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Canada has been at the forefront of the human rights campaign<br>\nand at one time even suspended financial assistance to Indonesia,<br>\nalleging violations of human rights in East Timor.<\/p>\n<p>But Yalden told The Jakarta Post that he did not raise<br>\nspecific human rights issues during his meeting with Ali Said. &quot;I<br>\nwon&apos;t comment on the human rights situation and I don&apos;t have any<br>\nrecommendation on what to do,&quot; he said.
