RI business invited to invest in Namibia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Visiting Namibian President Sam Nujoma invited
\nyesterday Indonesian investors to his country and Southern
\nAfrica.<\/p>\n
Nujoma told a business luncheon hosted by the Indonesian
\nChamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) that Indonesian
\ninvestors were very welcome in Namibia and other African
\ncountries to help develop their natural resources.<\/p>\n
\"Namibia has a liberal constitution which guarantees private
\nownership, human rights and freedom of expression. Government
\nbusiness and matters of governance are conducted in a multi-party
\ndemocratic environment. Furthermore, the government has pursued
\npragmatic, free market policies since independence (on March 20,
\n1990),\" Nujoma said.<\/p>\n
Nujoma arrived here Thursday for a five-day state visit to
\nstrengthen bilateral relations.<\/p>\n
He said Namibia offered vast investment opportunities in a
\nvariety of sectors, including agriculture, tourism, fishery,
\nmining and manufacturing.<\/p>\n
\"Agriculture is based primarily on livestock with emphasis on
\nbeef, lamb and ostriches. Mining is the largest single sector in
\nterms of employment and is a significant contributor to foreign
\nexchange revenue,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Opportunities for investment existed in the mining and
\nprocessing of diamonds, copper, uranium, tin, zinc, marble,
\nprecious and semi-precious stones, he said.<\/p>\n
He said his government had declared a 200-mile exclusive
\neconomic zone for fishing operations.<\/p>\n
\"Namibia is destined to become a major gas producer in the
\nnext three years or so. A gas turbine plant to generate
\nelectricity is planned and technology for this is being sought,\"
\nNujoma said.<\/p>\n
\"Compared to many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Namibia
\npossesses a relatively higher competitive edge in terms of
\nexcellent infrastructure and other facilities that we offer to
\ninvestors,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Nujoma said that the port of Walvis Bay, the only deep sea
\nharbor on the African West Coast between Cape Town and Luanda,
\nwas a gateway to the entire Southern African Development
\nCommunity (SADC) region.<\/p>\n
He said that SADC was home to 145 million people and offered
\nthe most convenient entry and exit point for trade to and from
\nthe region.<\/p>\n
The 824,295 square-kilometer Namibia, in the southwestern
\ncorner of the African continent, has a population of 1.6 million
\npeople. In 1995, the country's per capita income and GDP reached
\nUS$1,902 and $3.2 billion, respectively.<\/p>\n
Kadin's acting president, Dewi Motik Pramono, said the visit
\nwould probably not produce immediate deals but follow-up
\nexchanges and business visits between the two countries would
\neventually lead into business joint ventures.<\/p>\n
Nujoma who met with President Soeharto yesterday is scheduled
\nto return home Monday after visiting North Sumatra and Bali. (icn)<\/p>",
