RI building boom could mean big business for Australia<\/p>\n
SYDNEY (AFP): An Australian minister yesterday urged the
\ncountry's building firms to tap into Indonesia's housing boom.<\/p>\n
\"To guarantee the ongoing viability of an industry which
\nemploys, directly and indirectly, 500,000 Australians, it is
\nimperative that we link into the housing and construction boom
\noccurring just to our north,\" said Administrative Services
\nMinister Frank Walker<\/p>\n
At a conference on building business opportunities in
\nIndonesia, Walker noted that country's plans for more than 18
\nmillion new homes by 2020.<\/p>\n
He said Australia could use the advantages of being close and
\nhaving similar environmental conditions.<\/p>\n
But firms should not \"expect to put in a tender, build a
\nbuilding and pack up your tools to come home.\"<\/p>\n
\"Relationships must first be nurtured, trust and respect
\ndeveloped, and diverse needs recognized and fulfilled,\" Walker
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Many opportunities exist for dynamic Australian firms. But
\nbusiness people must deliver business orientated solutions,
\nrelevant to the Indonesian market,\" he added.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia demands quality products, service, skills transfer,
\nenvironmental sensitivity and an integrated approach to building
\ndevelopment, \" Walker told the audience, which included 20
\nIndonesian officials.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's building targets over the next five years include
\n500,000 units of low cost housing in urban areas, 300,000 units
\nin rural areas, and large-scale urban renewal in 125 cities, the
\nconference heard.<\/p>\n
Hendro Moeljono, director general of the research and
\ndevelopment agency at Indonesia's public works ministry, said
\nbeing a partner with Australia would have significant benefits,
\nparticularly in investment and building prefabrication areas.<\/p>\n
\"For Australia, the big market for construction industry in
\nIndonesia is quite challenging,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"It will extend job opportunities as well as providing the
\nstepping stone for marketing construction technology to the far
\nEast,\" he added.<\/p>",
