RI briefs IMF panel on central bank law<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian officials on Saturday briefed an
\nInternational Monetary Fund's (IMF) panel on the necessity of
\namendments to the central bank law, stressing that it should not
\nbe a \"conditionality\" on the disbursement of the next tranche of
\nIMF loans.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Marzuki Darusman on Saturday evening told The
\nJakarta Post that he had just attended a meeting earlier in the
\nday with the expert panel to brief them \"on the need for change\"
\nin relation to the central bank law.<\/p>\n
\"We appealed to them that these measures were very important
\nin the perception of the Indonesian public,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Marzuki added that he also augured the team on the need to
\navoid a feeling that the IMF might be \"an obstacle in good
\ngovernance in Indonesia.\"<\/p>\n
Deliberations at the House of Representatives on proposed
\namendments to Central Bank Law No 23\/1999 was last month
\npostponed pending the consultation with the IMF team.<\/p>\n
The IMF has expressed concern over the draft amendments which
\nmay result in stripping away Bank Indonesia's independence,
\nsuggesting that political interference in the bank's monetary
\npolicies could jeopardize macroeconomic management.<\/p>\n
Marzuki, who during the meeting with the four-man IMF team was
\naccompanied was by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Rizal
\nRamli, underlined that the question of the amendments \"must not
\nbe some sort of conditionality for the IMF to release funds.\"<\/p>\n
The IMF expert panel team consists of former Chilean Central
\nBank governor Roberto Zahler, former New Zealand Central Bank
\ngovernor Donald T. Brash, former Bank Indonesia director Boediono
\nand Indonesian banking law expert Sutan Remy Syahdeni.<\/p>\n
According to Marzuki this was the second meeting held since
