RI boxers to start Asiad program soon<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina) has named
\neight boxers for next year's Asian Games in Pusan, South Korea
\nwith intensive training expected to begin no later than early
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
Pertina's vice secretary general Didit Soedijoto said on
\nThursday that in accordance with National Sports Council (KONI)
\ntraining guidelines, the pugilists would be divided into two
\ngroups based on their past achievements and medal winning
\npotential.<\/p>\n
\"The top listed boxers will be given training privileges
\ncompared to their non-priority teammates, such as overseas
\nstints,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Didit said Pertina had put middleweight Hendrik Simangunsong,
\nlightwelterweight Bara Gomies and lightweight Bonyx Saweho at the
\ntop of the list. However, Hendrik would be dropped for failing to
\nturn up for the national championships in the West Sumatra
\ncapital of Padang last week, Didit added.<\/p>\n
\"Pertina is waiting for KONI's approval of Hendrik's
\nreplacement,\" Didit said. He refused to disclose the substitute.<\/p>\n
Didit also kept the identity of the remaining five boxers a
\nsecret, pending KONI's endorsement of their inclusion in the
\nteam.<\/p>\n
\"But I can assure you that they have achieved a lot and have a
\nbright future.<\/p>\n
\"This is important because we are also carrying out a long-
\nterm program of developing young talents,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Didit also said Cuban coach Carlos Jesus Pennate Torres would
\nmanage the training program for the Asian Games. He will be
\nassisted by national coach Wellem Gomies, who will focus on the
\ntop boxers.<\/p>\n
Wellem will take over while Torres takes a one-month break
\nfrom Dec. 15.<\/p>\n
\"I don't think it will be a big problem as both coaches have
\nworked together before. Pertina has yet to name the other coaches
\nto handle the second group of boxers.\"<\/p>\n
KONI has announced that it would only prepare athletes from 20
\nsports, including boxing, for the Asiad, citing the event's high
\n-level competitiveness.<\/p>\n
Other than boxing, the sports are archery, badminton, beach
\nvolleyball, billiards, bodybuilding, canoeing, cycling,
\ngymnastics, judo, karate, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming,
\ntae kwon do, tennis, track and field, weightlifting and wushu.<\/p>\n
The requirements include being finalists at the Kuala Lumpur
\n2001 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in September, ranked among the
\ntop five in Asia or being recipients of the Olympics Solidarity
\ngrant.<\/p>\n
All eight boxers are expected to pass a physical test which
\nwill be conducted by KONI on Jan. 20.<\/p>",
