        "content": "<p>RI benchmark firmer on better sentiment<\/p>\n<p>HONG KONG (Dow Jones): Spreads on Asian benchmark bonds were<br>\nmixed Friday from a week ago, with Indonesia benefiting from<br>\nimproved sentiment as fears about a possible impeachment of<br>\nPresident Abdurrahman&quot; Gus Dur&quot; Wahid dwindled.<\/p>\n<p>As Gus Dur and the public listened to speeches by<br>\nparliamentarians ahead of the vote of confidence, sentiment that<br>\nparliament will cast their vote in favor of Wahid became<br>\nstronger.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Indonesia&apos;s 2006 benchmark tightened by 36 basis<br>\npoints against U.S. Treasurys from a week ago.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The news is good so (market) sentiment is better,&quot; said one<br>\ntrader in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between bid and offer prices remained wide, at<br>\n57 basis points Friday, reflecting the illiquidity of the bond<br>\nand a lack of trading due to continued uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;There&apos;s no real selling or buying&quot; of Indonesia&apos;s paper, said<br>\nanother trader.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants said that trading of Indonesian bonds will<br>\nremain volatile and slim at least until the end of the summer<br>\nwhen Indonesia&apos;s political future may be clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Asian bonds remained well bid despite some slight<br>\nspread widening overnight because of a drop in U.S. Treasury<br>\nyields in the New York session.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury yields tightened across the board overnight, as<br>\nthe market rallied after the government&apos;s successful sale of $5<br>\nbillion on 30-year Treasurys. The yields climbed slightly higher<br>\nearlier in Tokyo on profit taking.<\/p>\n<p>Traders said that any trading will remain subdued through the<br>\nmonth, ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve&apos;s rate decision on Aug.<br>\n22. Recent mixed economic data in the U.S. and more dovish<br>\ncomments from Federal Reserve officials are leaving market<br>\nparticipants to guess which way the Fed will eventually lean.<\/p>",
