RI banking on achieving Rp 6,000 exchange mark<\/p>\n
NEW YORK (Dow Jones): Indonesia is fully committed to achieve
\nforeign exchange stability and is aiming at getting its currency
\nbelow Rp 6,000 to the dollar level, the governor of the central
\nbank said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters leaving the Manhattan headquarters of
\nChase Manhattan Bank where he was addressing Indonesia's creditor
\nbanks, Bank Indonesia Governor Sjahril Sabirin said he wanted to
\nget the foreign exchange 'rate more line with the strength of
\nIndonesia's economy.'<\/p>\n
Sabirin and Indonesian Finance Minister Fuad Bawazier were
\nleaving a meeting with bankers assembled in New York to attempt
\nto find a framework to address the country's $68 billion
\ncorporate debt overhang.<\/p>\n
Sabirin stressed that the reestablishment of confidence in his
\ncountry's economy is essential to stabilize the rupiah.<\/p>\n
\"We believe that with that the policy (the new International
\nMonetary Fund agreement) will be stronger,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The central bank governor said he addressed bankers with
\nrespect to the country's current economic situation, especially
\nin the context of the new IMF agreement.<\/p>\n
Last week, the IMF and Indonesia agreed to compromise on yet
\nanother plan, the third in six months, to allow the disbursement
\nof a $43 billion rescue package.<\/p>",
